The Role of Ultrasound Scan in Pregnancy

A mother should do at least 3 scans during the 40 weeks of pregnancy β€” one every three months. A scan can detect pregnancy after 4 weeks of amenorrhea.

Important Note for Expectant Mothers

The three scans described below are for mothers who have no complications such as lower abdominal pain, bleeding, drainage of liquor (amniotic fluid), or cramps. If you experience any of these symptoms, please seek immediate medical attention and additional scans may be required.

  • Fetal well-being assessment
  • Fetal anatomy assessment to rule out abnormalities
  • Assessment of amniotic fluid volume
  • Placental location β€” check for placenta previa
  • Cervical incompetence screening
  • Nuchal cord detection
  • Fetal heart rate monitoring
Weeks 27–40
Third Scan β€” Third Trimester

Final assessment to prepare for a safe delivery:

  • Fetal presentation β€” cephalic, breech, or transverse
